Before It Was Cool: Early Recoil Control

This strange pistol, the Hamilton Model 1901, seems to incorporate something we would consider rather modern; a recoil and rise control mechanism that works from downward force. The bolt slides along a track down into the grip. When the weapon is fired, the bolt starts traveling down (it's an open blowback design) and that helps counter the rise of the muzzle. Plus it also looks interesting.
And people thought the Kriss Vector SMG was an original concept.

It works with the same idea (with the recoil spring and all that right behind the magazine).
