Failed Deception

The markings look strange on the Spitfire because it was a captured example repaired and repainted, then used in a series of propaganda photographs for German magazines. This photograph is one of them. Others show the same Spitfire trailing smoke, pretending to be shot down. Those responsible for the repainting, in their ignorance, placed the roundels in the same positions that the Luftwaffe black crosses were on their aircraft.
