The meet up of Gemini 6 and 7 in 1965. This showed that the American space program could do more than just boast. Meeting up in space was just one check mark on the long list of things to do in pursuit of President Kennedy's goal of going to the moon within the decade. While successful, this mission had quite a few problems. Gemini 7, on a dual purpose mission (to meet with Gemini 6 and to stay in space for 14 days) had already been launched. On the launch pad, Gemini 6 had a few issues and couldn't lift off for a painstaking amount of time. But, in the end, it was a success. |
